Your diversity at work

Soft Skills/Canadian Workplace Coaching for Canadian Immigrants

Do you have an immigrant worker with great technical skills but is struggling with the interpersonal side and doesn’t seem to understand the workplace culture? You’re not alone. New Canadians receive very little in the way of pre-employment training on how to handle workplace situations. Without understanding workplace culture and the required soft skills to succeed, they often don’t get to reach their potential. In the worse case scenario, their employment is terminated and their confidence takes a blow. Lost talent, lost opportunity. A lose-lose for all concerned!

Here are a few signs that a Canadian immigrant worker could benefit from our coaching:

Let’s take a look at one of our many success stories.

CASE STUDY

N. has lived in Canada for almost 20 years working in her chosen field where she has been able to use her highly developed technical skills. However, she is at risk of losing her job. Her job requires daily engagement with the public and her co-workers. She is failing at her interpersonal relationships and does not understand why. Traditional forms of coaching and mentoring have not worked. N. considers herself to be polite and hardworking, yet complaints are pouring in from the public and her co-workers. She has received a warning that she must change quickly or face termination. N. has no understanding of what standard Canadian workplace practices are because no one has ever told her and she certainly doesn't know what to do to change her behavior. She feels under attack and worst of all could lose her career. Her boss decides to give her one more chance and calls Diversity at Work.

RESULT

After just 10 hours of in person soft skills/intercultural coaching, N. has made a complete turnaround. She learned the style of communication she used in her country of origin does not work in Canada and now understands why. She has improved her intonation and changed her aggressive style of communication into assertiveness. N. knows the best way to resolve conflicts in the workplace. She has learned how to develop a rapport with clients and co-workers and has received customized templates to help her to succeed. We have worked on her intonation and added colour to her voice. Her body language has also improved and the public no longer complain about her being intimidating. She has also started to understand her boss's participatory style of leadership. N. and her boss report a much happier, confident employee who has dramatically improved her customer and interpersonal relationships at work. N. feels less stressed at work because she understands the environment better and how to succeed in it.
